Cobalt is a steel-grey, very tough heavy metal and is mainly used in battery technology as a cathode material for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.
Like nearly all base and precious metals, the cobalt price has in recent years been affected by the dramatic fluctuations that result from a complex interrelationship between different factors for instance the strongly increasing demand from China and India, a general scarcity of raw materials, producers' lack of flexibility in response to changed demand situations and speculative flight from investors in the raw materials markets.
