Manganese (see Battery raw material manganese) is a silvery-grey, hard and brittle heavy metal, and is mainly used in battery technology in the form of its compounds or alloys as electrode material – for instance for alkaline-manganese batteries, for NiMH rechargeable batteries or lithium-manganese high-current cells.

Like nearly all base and precious metals, the manganese price has in recent years been affected by the dramatic fluctuations that result from a complex interrelationship between different factors – for instance the strongly increasing demand from China and India, a general scarcity of raw materials, producers' lack of flexibility in response to changed demand situations and speculative flight from investors in the raw materials markets.
