Basic terms in electrical engineering: F - K (Glossary)

FFZ
German Abbreviation for 'driverless industrial trucks'

Flat cell
A term coined in the 20-ies for very flat designs of dry batteries of the zinc-carbon type.

Float charge
To compensate spontaneous dischargeand keep accumulators at their maximum charge level and thus ready for use, they are constantly supplied with a so-called float charge after charging, this normally being 0.1 V above the no-load voltage.

Fuel Cells Fuel cells

Gassing
Batteries produce gases through electrolysis or the spontaneous decomposition of water molecules, mainly oxygen and hydrogen, which may also be contaminated depending on the battery design by entrained Electrolyte droplets. This process is called gassing. Gassing can produce the highly-explosive Electrolytic gas!

Gel electrolyte
To make batteries with a fluid Electrolyte leak-proof, the electrolyte can be gelled. With lead accumulators, for example, this is carried out by adding SiO2 to the sulphuric acid.

Good charge Memory effect

High-temperature battery
A type of battery that has to be operated at high temperatures for technical reasons, for example because an Electrolyte on the basis of molten salt has been used.

IEC
IEC stands for 'International Electrotechnical Commission'. It was founded in 1906 with the goal of encouraging international co-operation in all areas of standardisation and associated fields.

Internal resistance
The resistance that opposes the flow of current within a battery. The internal resistance is an important parameter in the design of batteries, if this is lowered the Power density is increased.

Ion
Electrically charged atom or molecule - carrier of an electrical charge

Iron Iron

Iron-air battery Metal-air battery

Joule effect
Energy loss that occurs through the heating of an energized conductor:
Joule effect Q = I2R t (Joule)
(R = resistance in ohms, I = current in amperes, t = time in seconds)
