SAFT (Lexicon / Who's Who?)

SAFT S.A. is a French public limited company, headquartered in Bagnolet (a suburb of Paris), which was founded in 1918 as Société des Accumulateurs Fixes et de Traction. SAFT is regarded as one of the world's leading manufacturers for batteries and rechargeable batteries for industrial and military application areas. The group employs approximately 3,800 people throughout the world and has a market presence in 18 countries: in 2007 total sales were around 600 million euros.


The SAFT Group

The SAFT Group consists of three divisions:

Industrial Battery Group (IBG)

Rechargeable batteries (nickel and lithium technologies) for industrial applications, for instance aviation, for underground rails and trams, high-speed trains, for power generation and distribution, and for hospitals and public buildings. In 2007 IBG accounted for about 47% of the group's sales.


Specialty Battery Group (SBG)

High-performance batteries and rechargeable batteries (lithium and Li-ion) for the military and aerospace. In 2007 SBG accounted for about 39% of the group's sales.


Rechargeable Battery Systems (RBS)

Rechargeable batteries (Ni-Cd and Ni-MH) for example for emergency lighting, mobile medical equipment, radio systems and video equipment. In 2007 IBG accounted for about 14% of the group's sales.


Joint Ventures

The company has joint ventures with Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions (automotive and hybrid vehicles sector) and with the ASB group (thermal batteries for combat missiles and so-called smart weapons).

Nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries (Ni-Cd)
Nickel-hydrogen rechargeable batteries (Ni-H2)
Nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries (Ni-MH))

Silver technologies

Magnesium-silver chloride batteries (Ag-ClMg)
Silver-zinc batteries (Ag-Zn)
Silver oxide-aluminium batteries (AgO-Al)
