| The Yuasa Group has a long history steeped in tradition, stretching back to 1666. The company (Yuasa Hardware Co.) was founded back then in Kyoto as a trading company, which initially supplied charcoal to foundries and blacksmith's workshops. In keeping with common practice at the time the customers sometimes paid with their products instead of money, which meant that Yuasa gradually expanded its trading activities to include swords, knives and other products made by such workshops. In 1915 Yuasa Battery Manufacturing began manufacturing batteries on the grounds of Yuasa Iron Works in Sakai, Osaka, and in 1918 this company adopted the name Yuasa Storage Battery Co. Ltd. with head offices in Takatsuki, near Osaka, Japan. In 1954 it was renamed Yuasa Battery Co. Ltd. The North American subsidiary Yuasa Battery Inc. (U.S.A.) was founded in 1963, which was followed by British Yuasa Battery (U.K.) Ltd. in 1981. The European sales and marketing centre Yuasa Battery (Europe) GmbH was established in Düsseldorf in 1982. Finally in 2004 the parent group merged with the Japanese company Japan Storage Battery Co., Ltd. to form GS Yuasa Corporation. The GS Yuasa Group today manages 81 international subsidiaries and its business operations involve manufacturing as well as marketing and selling batteries, power production systems, lighting and other electric equipment. The battery production primarily focuses on rechargeable batteries for vehicles (for instance passenger cars, motorcycles, forklift trucks, wheelchairs and hybrid vehicles) as well as special batteries, for instance for satellites, emergency lighting, medicine, alarm systems, uninterruptible power supply systems and telecommunication systems.
